“Bells” is the celebrated set that overjoyed the audience at New York’s Town Hall on May 1st, 1965. It’s a ferocious, twenty-minute romp containing excellent group improvisation and Ayler's signature military-themed melodies. The performance marks an important shift in Albert’s music: towards blurring the lines between composition and improvisation. It is also the debut recording of Charles Tyler.

ESP-Disk' Cassette Collection - Officially licensed from ESP-DISK' 2018

Recorded July 17th, 1964, by New York artist Michael Snow for use as the soundtrack for his film entitled "New York Eye and Ear Control".

1966-USA

Release notes :

Arguably the best band Albert Ayler ever had, for a very interesting 1964 collaborative freely improvised soundtrack project for Michael Snow's film of the same name.

Michael Snow, the Toronto-based filmmaker and pianist and catalyst for free improvisational performers everywhere; painter, sculptor and record producer, and the pride of Canada, used the image of pianist-composer Carla Bley as the inspiration for an art film, NY EYE & EAR CONTROL. For his soundtrack, he assembled a group of ESP artists in his loft and recorded them on July 17, 1964.

Personnel: Albert Ayler: tenor sax / Don Cherry: trumpet, cornet / John Tchicai: alto saxophone / Roswell Rudd: trombone / Gary Peacock: bass / Sunny Murray: drums

Tracklisting :

A1. Don's Down (1:05) A2. AY (21:24) B1. ITT (23:22)

ESP-Disk' Cassette Collection - Officially licensed from ESP-DISK' 2017

Recorded in New York City, July 10th, 1964

*The release includes a bonus track “Vibrations” (for the cassette edition only)

1965-USA

Release notes :

Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people’s eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February ’64, in New York, but this was the first album where neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording.

Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler’s sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader’s unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments.

Personnel: Albert Ayler, tenor saxophone / Gary Peacock, bass / Sunny Murray, percussion.

Tracklisting :

Side A) 1. "Ghosts: First Variation" 2. "The Wizard" 3. "Spirits" / Side B) 1. "Ghosts: Second Variation" 2. "Vibrations" (bonus track, with Don Cherry)

On November 11th, 1964, Giuseppi Logan went to Bell Sound Studios to record his first album for the newly formed ESP-Disk' label. The session is rich with imagination, and added to the dimension of musicians who would become the roster of ESP-Disk'.

Percussionist Milford Graves recorded his first and only ESP-Disk' recording on July, 1965 along with fellow percussionist Sonny Morgan. According to Graves, the titles were given numbers according to how many beats were in each measure.

ESP-Disk' Cassette Collection - Officially licensed from ESP-DISK' 2017

Recorded on December 12, 1962 at Town Hall, NYC

1965-USA

Release notes :

In 1961, trumpeter Don Cherry had left Coleman's band, and its membership morphed into this trio. The following year, Ornette, tired of receiving lower fees than white musicians drawing smaller crowds, tripled his fee. After the resulting booking drought, in December 1962, Coleman produced and recorded his own concert at Town Hall in New York City.

For the next two years, he made no appearances other than informally sitting in on others' gigs on occasion. Thus, when ESP-Disk' acquired some of the tracks from the Town Hall concert (in return for legal work ESP owner Bernard Stollman had done for Coleman) and issued them in the label's first batch of releases in 1965, it was important documentation of Coleman's evolution since the end of his time on Atlantic Records. Not only was it the first recording of his trio with Izenzon and Moffett, who were extremely compatible with the leader's new direction, it also included Coleman's first classical composition, "Dedication to Poets and Writers" (played by a string quartet), which anticipated elements of its composer's later style.

Personnel: Ornette Coleman, alto sax / David Izenzon, bass / Charles Moffett, drums

Tracklisting :

Side A) 1. Doughnut (9:28) 2. Sadness (4:20) 3. Dedication to Poets and Writers (9:17) Side B) 1. The Ark (23:46)

Recorded by Richard L. Alderson at RLA Sound Studios, New York City, April 20, 1965

1965-USA

Release notes :

The astonishing session that went light years beyond "free jazz" improvisation to create music of deeply felt, explosive and gentle gestures made from sound itself without reference to previous notions of melody or harmony. This set of tracks finds Sun Ra breaking ground by using synthesizers and having the Arkestra musicians double on percussion. Come with Sun Ra's original self-created jacket art.

Personnel: Pat Patrick: baritone sax, percussion; John Gilmore: tenor sax, timpani; Marshall Allen: piccolo, alto sax, bells, spiral cymbal; Ronnie Boykins: bass; Teddy Nance: trombone; Jimhmi Johnson: percussion; Robert Cummings: bass clarinet, wood blocks; Chris Capers: trumpet; Bernard Pettaway: bass trombone; Danny Davis: flute, alto sax; Sun Ra: bass marimba, electronic celeste, piano, tympani.

Tracklisting :

Side A) 1. Heliocentric (4:17) 2. Outer Nothingness (7:38) 3. Other Worlds (4:35) Side B) 1. The Cosmos (7:30) 2. Of Heavenly Things (5:44) 3. Nebulae (3:19) 4. Dancing in the Sun (1:56)

ESP-Disk' Cassette Collection - Officially licensed from ESP-DISK' 2018

Recorded by Richard L. Alderson at RLA Sound Studios, New York City, November 16, 1965.

1966-USA

Release notes :

More explorations of outer space by the spokesman for the space age. When Walt Whitman wrote, "I am vast; I contain multitudes," he could have been channeling Sun Ra. The man born Herman Blount in Alabama, who claimed he was from Saturn, was equally at home reviving Fletcher Henderson compositions based on their original arrangements or unleashing totally free-form, athematic group improvisation - and many styles in between. It was practically a given that a New York-based (as he was in the '60s) avant-jazz performer as colorful and eccentric as Sun Ra would end up on ESP-Disk'.

The 1965 sessions that produced the two volumes of Heliocentric Worlds came during the most extremely free-form period of Ra's career, contemporaneous with The Magic City (Saturn Records). Volume 1, recorded in April with an 11-member band, consisted of seven relatively short tracks (none over eight minutes); recorded in November with an octet, Volume 2, in contrast, was much freer and featured the side-long "The Sun Myth" (over 17 minutes in length) and "Cosmic Chaos" (14+). The horn players and bassist Ronnie Boykins have plenty of room to stretch out and take full advantage. "A House of Beauty" offers five minutes of relatively lyrical respite between the other tracks.

Personnel: Walter Miller (tp) Robert Cummings (bcl) Marshall Allen (as, fl, picc) John Gilmore (ts) Pat Patrick (bars, fl) Sun Ra (clavioline, p, tuned bgo) Ronnie Boykins (b) Roger Blank (d, per)

Tracklisting :

Side A) A1. The Sun Myth Side B) B1. House Of Beauty B2. Cosmic Chaos
